IMPROMEGA aims at contributing to alleviate the limited availability of marine ingredients (fishmeal and fish oil) constraining high-value species aquaculture, by embracing two innovate strategies, namely the search for new alternative and sustainably produced ingredients (aquatic invertebrate biomasses), and the exploitation of novel culture protocols that enhance the endogenous production of ω3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) of aquatic invertebrates. Indeed, some invertebrates can produce ω3 LC-PUFA and, consequently, their culture with an adequate supply of biosynthetic precursors under optimised physical-chemical conditions, emerges as an innovative and promising strategy to produce highly nutritious (i.e. rich in ω3 LC-PUFA) and sustainably sourced ingredients for aquaculture.
